The next seven steps will show you how to install the free MaxDB database and read and write to it from a PHP page. The reason why you would want to do this is, for instance, you are in an SAP project which uses MaxDB and you need to get up to speed with it quickly. These workshop steps will show you how. MaxDB has its roots in the 1980s, known then as "ADABAS". SAP then took over the database in the 1990s and called it "SAP DB" which was then released as open source. In 2003 MySQL got the rights from SAP to further develop the database and they renamed it to "MAX DB". Basically, MAX DB is a heavy-duty database similar to Oracle, but it has a license which allows you to use it for free. This step will show you how to where and how to download MAX DB from the Internet.

PHP

MaxDB PHP is an extension for PHP which provides access to the MySQL MaxDB databases using PHP scripts. It is an interface between the PHP programming language and the MaxDB SQL Database Connectivity (SQLDBC). For using PHP with MaxDB, the MaxDB SQLDBC and the MaxDB PHP packages are required.
The MaxDB PHP package is not part of the MaxDB standard installation package but can be downloaded from the PECL repository for PHP extensions.
